My name is Jennifer Hockstra and I would like to give you a little background information because I am going to be asking for some in return!
I am married and have 3 children: Nicholas, 19; Cole, 17; and Samantha, 16. I taught for 5 years at Houghton Lake Alternative High School after just getting my teaching degree in 2010. Before that I owned a bridal and prom retail store, sold insurance, and worked in admissions and financial aid at a community college. Through it all, I always tutored on the side any chance I got so I decided it was time I made teaching my full-time job instead of part-time. I love what I do or I wouldn't be doing it. I am here because I enjoy helping others learn, grow and achieve their goals.
My husband, Lonnie, and I just married August 21st, 2015. Before that, I had been married to Nick and Cole's father for 18 years until he passed away in 2012. Sam is Lonnie's from a previous marriage, but she is now my step-daughter. All of our kids are busy!
Nick recently completed his paralegal AIT in the Army and is being sent overseas. He also recently got married; the day after I did! My new daughter-in-law, Lindsay, will hopefully be joining him in the near future.
Cole is a senior in high school at Roscommon. He has been there his entire life and wanted to graduate there, so he is staying with his grandparents in Roscommon this year. We will be Skyping during the week for homework and just catching up and seeing each other on weekends. Cole is a Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and is working on his Eagle project. I will be posting pictures as he progresses to show you what we have been up to! He has already been accepted to Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michgan and is taking college classes through dual-enrollment.
Sam is also a senior, but at Fruitport High School near Muskegon. She and Lonnie will live there until she graduates and then he will be moving to Howard City with me. She has been involved in softball, basketball, volleyball, recreational softball and nationals travel volleyball. I will also post pictures of her tournaments and games.
I enjoy kayaking, snowmobiling and fishing. I have an eternally positive attitude and am a morning person. My policy is that each day is a new day and I live by it; I expect my students to do so as well. I will be your biggest fan, cheerleader and coach, but also your most stubborn pain in the rear when it comes to pushing you to excel. You may not like it at the time, but I promise it will be worth it in the end. Please let me know what your future plans are; I love to help students break down the steps to achieve their goals and show them the resources they need to get there!!
I am EXTREMELY excited to be here at Lakeview High School and looking forward to an AWESOME year!
